Excel Rotorua is in the process of establishing pilot projects to address educational needs identified with local educators.

The projects will cover areas such as literacy and numeracy, sight and hearing, attendance, family engagement, teacher support, student transitions to further education, training and employment and the establishment of a community internet hub.

Supported by Government agencies, the two-year Excel Rotorua initiative, being led by Te Taumata o Ngati Whakaue Iho Ake Trust, will focus on improving educational outcomes for all Rotorua's children and young people, with an emphasis on local solutions for local needs and aspirations.

Trust general manager Roana Bennett said that during early engagement with educators they had already identified areas of need which would result in the establishment of several local pilot projects.

While each of the projects currently being developed were important, she said the possibility of developing a community internet hub for all education services in Rotorua was the most exciting and had huge potential.

"The aim is to support all schools and early childhood centres to embrace wireless technology, as well as bringing the technology to learners and their families at an affordable price."

"Through Excel Rotorua we hope to support our community of Rotorua into the 21st century."

Details of the project were still being finalised, along with other pilot projects which would be facilitated by Excel Rotorua.

Launched recently by Education Minister Hekia Parata, Excel Rotorua could change the way education is provided in New Zealand by providing the model for future funding and delivery of education.

The Trust, which would work with other groups to establish the Excel Rotorua action plan, with support from government agencies, is the education arm of Ngati Whakaue which has been involved in the Rotorua education sector for more than 100 years.

"We give all credit to the education sector for their engagement and enthusiasm for Excel Rotorua's vision to make Rotorua a great place for education."
