MetService has advised of slow moving heavy showers for Taupo.

A few of these may be thundery and severe producing localised downpours of 25-44mm per hour.

The weather forecast was also to affect the east Waikato, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay area.

"Shower activity should ease tonight. Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips," MetService warned.

Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
