A talented Rotorua rugby player who never gave up his fight against testicular cancer has died.

Kurtis Jones was surrounded by family at home when he passed away on Monday. The 29-year-old was diagnosed with the disease in late 2013 and had actively encouraged men to "ditch the macho attitude and see a doctor if they had noticed symptoms".

The former Rotorua Boys' High School student and Waikite Rugby Club player underwent chemotherapy, multiple surgeries and had a stem cell transplant before exploring an alternative treatment of intravenous Vitamin C.

Mr Jones and his partner, Melissa Ewins, started a "Givealittle" page to help fund the expensive treatment, with sessions costing up to $250 per dose. More than $20,000 was raised.

Mr Jones said last year that he had surrounded himself with positive people.

"My journey has definitely been an eye opener to a lot of things, it's taught me to keep positive and surround myself with positive people.

"It's nice to see those people and even strangers be so generous and help me continue this treatment," Mr Jones said.

Tributes were flowing online for the popular personal trainer.

"You were a great example of a perfect gentleman ... I will always remember your drive and passion to succeed in life and encourage people to do what you did best," one person wrote.

"You fought right to the bitter end ... You're truly a hero," another wrote.

The much-loved son of Stephen and Turia Jones and brother of Turene, Mr Jones lies at Tunohopu marae at Ohinemutu. His funeral service is at 11am today at St Michael's Catholic Church on Lake Rd.
