Police praise public after violent Rotorua attack on woman

The 69-year-old was assaulted on Hinemoa St about 3.50pm.

Police have praised members of the public who came to the aid of a 69-year-old woman attacked on a Rotorua street.

Rotorua Area Prevention Manager Inspector Phil Gillbanks said police were alerted to the incident on Hinemoa St around 3.50pm.

“After seeing the assault, multiple members of the public quickly intervened and provided immediate care for the older woman,” he said.

Gillbanks said police found the alleged offender shortly afterwards and took her into custody.

“This was a callous and violent attack on a vulnerable member of our community and police are appalled by these actions,” he said.

“Police would like to recognise and thank the fast actions of the public, who showed the true empathetic and kind nature of our Rotorua community.”

A 39-year-old woman is due to appear in the Rotorua District Court tomorrow, charged with injuring with intent to injure and assault.
