Rotorua police have made a "very substantial" drug bust after Ngongotaha residents saw a man acting suspiciously in a ditch.

Residents called police after a man was seen in a ditch allegedly carrying a knife and meth pipe, under the influence of drugs, on Sunday morning.

Rotorua police area prevention manager Brendon Keenan said a "very substantial amount of methamphetamine, cocaine and other amphetamines" was found in a stolen vehicle nearby.

Keenan said the car had evaded detection from automatic number-plate recognition.

A man and woman have been charged with possession of drugs for supply.

The occupant ran to the door and tried to lock it, but the man forced his way in and demanded money.

The occupant was pushed to the floor and punched multiple times. The resulting injuries needed medical attention.

Before leaving out the door he came in, the man ripped a Samsung Galaxy S8 phone out of the victim's pocket and stole $300.

The male was described as wearing a dark hoodie and shorts and of a large/fat build.
