Police Notebook: High number of family violence callouts in Rotorua

A spike in family violence callouts in the past week meant members of the Rotorua police Criminal Investigation Branch had to help the family violence team.

Rotorua police crime prevention manager Inspector Brendon Keenan said last week police were called to 69 family violence events; nearly 10 a day.

He said the amount was unusually high and the CIB team were needed to help with the large number of incidents.

New alcohol prevention roster
An alcohol prevention team will be starting up in Rotorua from Saturday.

"Because of the winter sports season a lot of people are drinking, being disorderly and then driving," Keenan said.

The team will consist of four police officers who will be proactively checking licensed premises, monitoring members of the public and following up on any reports of disorderly behaviour.

Drivers asked to be mindful of winter conditions
The road policing unit had a busy week stopping 187 drivers, Keenan said.

The police are now working with a new system which replaces the fatal five offences.

RIDS, which stands for restraints, impairment, distraction and speed made up 90 per cent of offences police stopped drivers for in the last week.

Keenan said with winter around the corner people were encouraged to be mindful of the conditions.

"Be cautious of wet weather and slippery roads.

"Especially with motorbikes people need to follow safe riding practices."

A silver 1997 Honda Civic, registration AML946, taken from Clayton Rd, Mangakakahi.

A black 2006 Nissan Bluebird, registration LCF475, taken from Sunset Rd, Mangakakahi.

A blue 2013 Holden Barina, registration GYL943, taken from Rotorua central.

A grey 2003 Ford Falcon, registration KQN944, taken from Joanne Cres, Pukehangi.

A white 1992 Toyota Starlet, registration CZF605, taken from Collie Dr, Pukehangi.

A white 1999 Subaru Legacy, registration EUP567, taken from Taharangi St, Koutu.

The two plates stolen were registration CSC278 and CGR261, taken from Fairy Springs and Glenholme.
