Police issue 109 tickets over weekend-long operation in Bay of Plenty

Eastern Bay of Plenty Police are reminding drivers to help keep themselves and others safe on the road following a weekend-long road policing operation.

More than 300 drivers were stopped at six checkpoints from Friday afternoon.

Overall, 109 infringement notices were issued.

These were for a range of offences including speeding, not wearing a seatbelt and driving in breach of licence conditions.

Ten drivers were processed for drink-driving and 32 were found to be in breach of their licence conditions.

"Speeding was one of the most common offences, with 24 drivers or riders detected exceeding the limit," Eastern Bay of Plenty Road Policing Manager Ray Wylie said.

"It was particularly disappointing to see two motorcyclists well in excess of the speed limit given we've had six motorcycle fatalities in this area over the last four years.

"We know speed has the biggest impact on the outcome of a crash, whether you survive it or not, and that is why we won't stop talking about it.

"This weekend's operation was about preventing crashes and keeping all road users safe," he said.

"Something like putting on your seatbelt only takes two seconds and is a literal life saver.

"We would love to see everybody driving or riding sensibly and to the conditions every time they get behind the wheel or on their bike."
