The Armed Offenders Squad and a police Eagle helicopter have been deployed to help Bay of Plenty police arrest an alleged offender in Taupō.

A police spokeswoman said police attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle believed to be driven by a wanted offender in Wharewaka about 1pm.

The driver fled towards Taupō on State Highway 1.

Police are now searching for the driver in the east Taupō area.
