A section of State Highway 2 in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is closed.

A police chase has ended with a car crashing into a truck near Taneatua in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Police tried to stop the vehicle due to concerns about the manner of driving near Taneatua about 12pm today.

The vehicle failed to stop and after a short chase it crashed into a truck on the Pekatahi Bridge.

The vehicle then reversed into a police car, following which the driver fled on foot and tried to take another vehicle.

The driver was then arrested by police.

The driver received a minor injury in the initial crash and was taken by ambulance to hospital and has since been discharged.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The road was closed for a time but has since reopened.
