A man has been winched to safety after hours of being stuck on a ledge in the Kaimai Range.

Police and Land Search and Rescue staff were called to help the man, who had entered the range from Thompsons Track and was headed for the Kauritatahi Hut.

A police spokeswoman said police were called after 4pm by a person who said they were stuck on a ledge near a track in the area.

At the time there were no indications the man was injured, but emergency services were working out how to approach the rescue, she said. Police had notified Land Search and Rescue which had some people going in on foot.

The spokeswoman said police were advised after 8pm that the man was safe after being winched out of the mountain range.
