Cave Of Costumes is a must-go destination for anyone heading to a fancy dress party. We talk to owner Sue Cooper about her store, which recently moved from Amohia to bigger premises on Hinemoa St.

In a nutshell, what does your business do?

We hire costumes, most of which are made on the premises. We also do custom costume design. We also offer repairs and alterations.

What inspired you to set up your current business?

I have always made costumes for my own children and studied fashion design. My passion is historical fashion. With my creative streak and my design skills I gradually evolved it into a business, that I love.

What was the best business decision you have made and why?

Moving the business into a downstairs shop, with a big shop frontage (1219 Hinemoa St). The reasons? After four years in business the public didn't know I existed. My customers have two hours' free parking. The shop is now pram and wheelchair friendly. I needed more room for expansion.

What was your worst business mistake and what did you learn from it?

Wearing too many hats and becoming exhausted. I learned that you outsource some things.

What do you see as the biggest opportunity for your business in the year ahead?

We have a bigger premises to expand with the goal of being a one-stop shop.

If you could do any other job for a day what would that be?

My instant reply to this is: I cannot think of anything else I'd rather do.

How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?

It isn't easy, but I ensure that Sundays are family days.

What is the best thing about being in business in Rotorua?

People are friendly, the small business community is very supportive. Small enough that you can get to know your customers.

If you were mayor of Rotorua for one day what one change would you make?

I would have the recycling collected in the same way our rubbish is.
