IN MOTION: Eastern Pirates' Mark Smale (pictured bowling against Taupo Schools 1st XI last weekend) and his side are set for a local derby thriller on Saturday.

The Rotorua cricket community is all set for a thrilling derby when the two local in-form teams square off against each other.

Unbeaten sides Central Reserves and Eastern Pirates will battle it out for the top spot in the Rotorua/Taupo senior reserve grade at Ray Boord tomorrow. Eastern Pirates currently own the local bragging rights between the two sides - having won the spirited tussles for the last four years.

However, Central's captain Paul Wyllie said his team was full of confidence after beating BOP Indians CC last weekend - the first time in three years, but warned players must be "aggressive" from the off.

"This is the top derby for us. It is always fiercely competitive and a great spectacle for everyone watching," he said.

"We know we will have to bring our A-game throughout and be aggressive because Pirates have quality throughout the team.

"At the moment though we just seem to be in the habit of breaking records. I think that's because we started the season with a spirited win and followed it up straight away.

"Pirates have shown exceptional batting so far. We will need to be very focused in the field and hopefully take some early wickets."

Pirates will be a difficult team to beat - after two big opening wins including last Saturday's demolition of Taupo Schools 1st XI.

It will be the "first real test" of the season for the Pirates, according to captain Johnny Wiringi.

"This is definitely one of the derbies we most look forward to so there is no effort needed to motivate the players," he said.

"We are reasonably confident and Central haven't beaten us for years, but they are playing well at the moment and it will certainly be the hardest test for us so far.

"Central are a good unit so batting has to be a well-balanced performance from us. And in bowling we'll be looking to carry momentum from previous weeks."

In the other local derby Chance Cars Geyser City Reserves take on BOP Indians with both sides aiming to bounce back from last weekend's defeats.

The only other unbeaten side in the competition, Taupo Old Boys 1, will look to continue their winning streak against GM Painters Lake Taupo CC 2nd Xl.

Meanwhile, in the Western Bay of Plenty reserve grade bottom-of-the-table Rotorua side Geyser City aim to kick-start their campaign against fellow league strugglers Cadets.

Geyser travel to Fergusson Park, Tauranga, on the back of their fourth defeat of the competition last weekend.

Lake Taupo CC are the team to beat at the halfway stage of the first-round competition - leading the standings with an unbeaten record and they take on fourth-placed Tauranga Boys' College at home.

Second-placed Mount Maunganui are home to long-time rivals Katikati. The two teams have contested several McNaughton (Baywide Reserve Championship) Trophy title deciders in the last decade, with Mount Maunganui holding a narrow advantage.
