A police media spokeswoman said a car had gone off the road and hit a tree on State Highway 41 at Kuratau on the western side of Lake Taupo about 3.30pm.
Police, fire and ambulance staffare on the scene and a rescue helicopter has been called.
Fire service staff are setting up a landing zone for the helicopter.
