One person is dead after a crash at Taupo's Motutere Bay.

Police said the crash involved a motorcycle and another vehicle on State Highway 1.

One of the people involved was initially said by police to have serious injuries, but was confirmed dead later on Friday night.

Next of kin were being notified.

Emergency services were called shortly before 7pm.

The southbound lane remains closed while the Serious Crash Unit investigates, and traffic management is in place.

Delays are expected between Taupo and Turangi.

Police thanked motorists for their patience.
