One person has been seriously injured after a crash between a truck and a ute.

A police spokeswoman said the two vehicles crashed at the intersection of State Highway 30 and Shaw Rd.

Police were called to the crash at 3.37pm. Firefighters were also on the scene.

A St John spokeswoman said a rescue helicopter and two ambulances were sent to the scene.

One person with critical injuries was flown to Whakatāne Hospital, she said.

The road was closed and diversions put in place while the scene was cleared. It has since been reopened.
