DOWN TO EARTH: Paul Potts.

DOWN TO EARTH: Paul Potts.

Opera sensation Paul Potts will tour New Zealand in April and is putting on a show in Rotorua. Rotorua Daily Post senior reporter Matthew Martin spoke to him about the tour

Worldwide fame and fortune doesn't seem to have gone to the head of the talented Paul Potts.

He and wife Julie-Ann live in Port Talbot, not far from Swansea in Wales, and like everyone else in the United Kingdom is sick to death of the bad weather.

When the Rotorua Daily Post spoke to him recently, he was looking forward to his latest world tour, which follows on from the movie of his sudden rise to fame One Chance.

"I loved the film, it was funny and touching and dramatic all at the same time, it was everything I wanted it to be.

"James [Corden] covered my character really well. He did very well making the singing look convincing."

Rotorua is one of nine cities on his One Chance New Zealand tour and his concert here will be the British tenor's only performance for fans in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

Potts became an overnight international sensation when he first appeared in Britain's Got Talent seven years ago, stunning the show's judges and viewers with flawless renditions of Puccini's Nessun Dorma and Andrea Bocelli's Time To Say Goodbye.

Potts said he never tires of performing his signature song Nessun Dorma.

"It's a wonderful piece of music and I've performed it thousands of times. I never sing it exactly the same every time, but I do try and stay true to the original."

It will be his fifth trip to New Zealand and his second visit to Rotorua and he says he is looking forward to performing in the Civic Theatre.

"It's a lovely little theatre, I really like it."

Potts will be accompanied by a full orchestra. "It will be a similar sort of set-up [to larger concerts], but a little more intimate because it's a real theatre.

"I like the feel of theatres, they have more atmosphere."

The first time Potts came to Rotorua he was hosted by our own Lizzie Marvelly.

"Lizzie took us all around Rotorua, I'll always remember her saying 'you can smell it before you see it'.

"The mud pools are fascinating and there's a huge amount of culture, it's a wonderful place.

"I last saw Lizzie in London last year when she was recording and it's great to see her doing so well.

"Her new song is a really good song."

When Potts isn't performing his favourite hobby is photography.

"I take cameras on all of my trips. My wife says I'm snap-happy. I really want to clear a few days before the tour starts and do some sightseeing.

"It's a long way to come, it's not like we can pop over for the weekend."

He said New Zealand will mark the start of a world tour to promote the movie, directly afterwards he will head to the United States for 17 more shows.

The Paul Potts One Chance concert is on at the Rotorua Civic Theatre on Easter Sunday, April 20. Tickets are on sale from Ticketmaster at the Convention Centre, at www.ticketmaster.co.nz, or phone (0800) 111 999. A three-course pre-show dinner is also available in the Convention Centre's Concert Chamber.
