The reaction has been huge, with thousands taking to social media to express their feelings of grief, sympathy, sadness and (when it became known the fire was suspicious) anger.
People have shared their memories of those weddings, funerals and the fellowship they enjoyed within those walls, as well as concern for what will happen now and a determination to help the church recover.
One Facebook comment noted 'it's just a building'. They were wrong, it was a building that represented life-changing memories and faith. No 'just' about that.
But they were also right. The church will be rebuilt and the weddings will continue, the funerals will continue and the people of the church will continue to offer the comfort and friendship they always have.
And Rotorua will be beside them all the way.
