One man has been arrested following a police operation that stretched from Tauranga to Hinuera today.

Police located a car believed to be driven by a person who had several warrants to arrest on Cameron Rd in Tauranga at 2.40pm.

Police tracked the driver to the Pyes Pa area and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The driver fled.

The Armed Offenders Squad was then deployed as a precaution, police said in a statement.

Police followed the vehicle through Oropi, back to Tauranga, then over the Kaimai Range and into the Matamata-Piako District, the statement said.

The vehicle was spiked at the intersection of SH27 and SH29 at 3.53pm.

The vehicle then crashed into a powerpole and the driver was taken into custody.

Police said charges were likely.

Earlier it was reported that a car was being followed by the police from Pyes Pa towards Rotorua.

When questioned a police media spokeswoman could not confirm whether or not there was a pursuit but there were a number of units around the Oropi area.

However, a witness spoken to by the Bay of Plenty Times said she saw a car driving dangerously.

She said she had seen a vehicle travelling on Tauranga Direct Rd around Pyes Pa and heading towards Rotorua about 3.20pm.

Opinion: Police not to blame for increased chases

26 Mar 03:20 PM

The witness said the vehicle was passing dangerously on blind corners but had since seen four police cars travelling toward Tauranga about 3.40pm.

The police media spokeswoman said police were tracking a car by intelligence as the driver was someone they were seeking to speak to.

She said although they were not actively pursuing the vehicle, they were active in the area.

A resident on Oturoa Rd, outside of Rotorua, said she heard the police coming up the road before she saw them about 3.36pm.

She saw two police cars racing towards State Highway 5 and believes they turned right at the intersection towards Hamilton.

However, she did not see a car in front of them.

Police media spokeswoman said she could not confirm the two vehicles seen on Oturoa Rd were connected as units were still present in the Oropi area.
