A Rotorua man has been killed in a single vehicle crash on Dun Rd, near Kaingaroa Forest.

Emergency services were called to the crash at 3.15pm.

Police said last night the man who died was 51 and was from Rotorua but his name would not be released until his family had been notified.

Constable Regan Framp of the Rotorua police told the Rotorua Daily Post at the scene the vehicle had been travelling along Dun Rd, also known as the Kaingaroa straights, towards State Highway 38 when it lost control, left the road and hit a tree.

Mr Framp said the cause of the crash was yet to be determined but the road was icy.

"We have no details about the driver. The driver is still in the car."

The Rotorua Fire Brigade was using the jaws of life to cut the man's body from the car.

A Rotorua Daily Post reporter at the scene said the blue car was wrapped around the tree and the vehicle was in several pieces.
