Claudia Huitema decided to follow in her mum Maree's footsteps and study nursing.

Watching the joy her mum got from nursing was the prompt Claudia Huitema needed to follow her mother into the health field.

"She'd come home from work every day really happy about being able to care for people and educate them."

Seeing her mum Maree have such job satisfaction was enough to convince Miss Huitema to pursue a career in health, although it was only after a year studying pre-medicine that she realised it was nursing that held her heart.

Miss Huitema was one of dozens of nurses and trainee nurses in Rotorua being celebrated yesterday as part of International Nurses Day.

She is part way through her first year of nursing at Massey University in Auckland, after making the switch in courses this year.

She believed many people underestimated how skilled nurses were these days.

"A lot of doctors now refer to nurses for extra knowledge."
