This week's Newsmaker is Rotorua photographer Peter Graney, who recently won the Asia Pacific prize in the Urban Photographer of the Year 2015.

Tell us about yourself.

I was born in Hamilton and moved to Rotorua as a teacher around 40 years ago. I was involved in the video movie rental business for many years and then went on to be a medical representative. After a serious car accident I focused on photography and teaching.

How long have you been taking photos for?

I started my passion for photography about eight years ago. I joined the Rotorua Camera Club and started self study of the art of photography.

What sparked your interest in taking photos?

I was a short story writer and decided to branch out into travel writing. I needed images and learnt it wasn't as easy as I first thought. I decided to try my hand at news photography and became part of the New Zealand Press Association team. I now work freelance for Setford News Photo Agency and TV companies providing breaking news images.

Is Rotorua a photogenic city?

It's the whole package - the scenery and the people. I cover the Rotorua Bike Festival for Events and Venues and that event provided me with a photo that won Sony World New Zealand Photographer of the Year 2014. Always have your camera handy in Rotorua is good advice.

Where's the best spot locally to get great photos?

Most photographers have a particular field of photography they focus on. Rather than a general best spot it is better to think about the best spot for the photographer's special interest.

What are your top tips for the average photographer for getting the best snap?

Learning about photography is a journey. You must see every image you take as a chance to improve. Join the Rotorua Camera Club for a start. I have always looked for images that will connect with the viewer. Mostly my photographic work has involved people in dramatic situations or following their passion. Study the masters of the section of photography you enjoy the most. For me it is street photography so Steve McCurry and Henri Cartier-Bresson are the two photographers I go to for inspiration.

What's the best photo you've ever taken?

Hopefully the best picture is my next photo. The image I have on my wall is called Sideshow Choir. It won a PSNZ gold medal and is a great example of making the ordinary extraordinary. It's of the clown faces at the sideshows and when I looked at them with their mouths open I saw a choir.

Apart from photography, what are your top three likes?

I value friendships, travel and learning new things.

While we are at it, what are your top three dislikes?

Arrogance, especially towards other cultures and people who are set in their ways. Not forgetting warm beer.

What was the best part about winning the international photography award?

I set a goal to be consistent in my photography. Last year I was awarded Sony New Zealand Photographer of the Year and earlier this year a Cathay Pacific Travel Media Award. Now to be awarded the Asia Pacific prize in the Urban Photographer of the Year 2015 means my goal is on track. But tomorrow is another day! My camera card is empty and needs to be filled. That's the challenge! This international award is a starting point, not an end point.
