Newsmaker: Jennie Skulander

This week's Newsmaker is Jennie Skulander, the frontwoman of rock band Devilskin, who have shot to fame with sell out concerts and their chart topping debut album.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I was born in Tokoroa, and lived in Rotorua until I was 22. I was a shy kid and I kind of fell into music at high school.

My second band won the regionals at the rockquest in 2001. I now own my own house in Hamilton with my partner.

What motivated you to get involved in music?

I listened to a lot of music as a teen, I used to imitate voices from my dad's heavy metal albums.

I used to sit in the music room at school and watch the other bands. I guess I got an itching for it then and one day just jumped on the mic and screamed.

You used to sing for local band Slipping Tongue, tell us a bit about that?

Yes I did, we formed at Rotorua Lakes High School in 2002, went through a few members, won some competitions, released an album then broke up in 2008. I learnt a lot of life lessons in those years.

How did the band Devilskin come about?

Paul Martin came to me when I had just moved to Hamilton and was keen to start something, at that time I was not. Then I was hit up about it about six months later.

I caved and that was the beginning. We formed late 2009.

Devilskin kicking on with big summer tour

What have you enjoyed most about touring with the band?

The sight seeing, the fans, the laughs, and sleeping in the back of the bus, and the snow in Ohakune!

Have you been surprised by the reaction you've been getting and your shows selling out?

Yes. It has totally blown us away. I'm still coming to terms with having a gold record and also having been the number one album in the country for three weeks straight.

It's so crazy going on stage and hearing a sold out crowd calling your name.

What are some of your aspirations for the future?

To tour Australia (that's on the cards) and then travel Europe and the United States. I hope to put out a new album and also a DVD. Also to do another tour of New Zealand but in summer this time. I'd love to win some awards and do some collaborations.

What do you love about Rotorua?

It's my home! There's always something to do. I love going to the Redwoods and the lakes. And my parents still live there.

Tell us three things about yourself most people wouldn't know?

I'm older than I look (I'm 29 years old), I'm a qualified make-up artist. I was never taught how to sing.
