A local icon and a local building firm were the supreme winners at the Rotorua Master Builders' Awards last night.
Rotorua Museum's detail, accuracy and an ability to seamlessly blend the old with the new picked up the top commercial project award for Mainzeal Property and Construction Ltd, while Rotorua company
Tissink Builders Ltd won Home of the Year for a $650,000-$1 million house in Kaharoa.
Judges were full of praise for the work Mainzeal did on Stage Two of the museum development.
"The result is very impressive - it is very difficult to tell where the original building ends and the extension begins."
Replicating the look and feel of the existing building using modern materials was key to this type of work, they said.
"With their absolute attention to detail the builders have achieved a very high degree of accuracy."
Making the most of the sun and the views were key ingredients in Tissink Builders' House of the Year.
The Kaharoa home is a series of pavilions, linked to obtain the benefit of the sun from the north and views out across Lake Rotorua to the south. Judges said it had been very well placed within its natural environment.
"Situated on a farm, the house has been elevated to maximise sun and views. This home has a well thought out floor plan and layout. The well-presented entranceway displays a great deal of intricate detail."
Praise was also given to the kitchen's layout and its position as a focal point. It also earned the builder the Heart Of The Home Kitchen Award.
