More than 8000 people are expected to watch drivers put the pedal to the metal at the Superstock Champs this weekend.

The annual event will be held at Paradise Valley Raceway tonight and tomorrow evenings and will feature a total of 70 stock car drivers who will battle it out for the title of World Invitation Superstock Champion.

Rotorua Stockcar Club secretary Sonja Hickey said three distinguished drivers from England would compete in the event, which is expected to draw crowds from across New Zealand and parts of the United Kingdom.

"It's going to be a huge event. People choose to come from all over the place just to watch some of the top drivers do what they do best," she said.

Ms Hickey said people of all ages and interests would enjoy Superstock racing.

"It's something entirely different. People will enjoy the speed, the action and the thrill.

"People who have never been before will just love it."

Ms Hickey has been involved in stockcars for years and said racing was addictive to watch.

"It's just an addiction. What's really awesome about it is it doesn't matter how fancy the gear is, how skilled the driver is, they can always get taken out by another car, so you just never know who will win.

"There's never a dull moment."

Tonight's event will feature the qualifying races for 21 places in the finals tomorrow night.
