Rotorua Energy Charity Trust will triple the number of annual tertiary scholarships they hand out this year.

The trust is increasing its total funding to $25,000 this year as well as increasing the number of total scholarships from four to 14, which will be made available for residents in three categories at Waiariki Institute of Technology in 2014.

Trust chairman Grahame Hall said the variety of scholarships available for students to study at Waiariki would reflect the needs of the community. Scholarships would be available from Level 5 to postgraduate students. Previously, scholarships were only available to Waiariki degree programmes.

Two new postgraduate scholarships - valued at $2500 each - will be available to full or part-time students studying for postgraduate certificate, diploma, or masters programmes.

Students must be studying a minimum of 60 credits in an academic year.

Eight new undergraduate scholarships - valued at $1500 each - will be available to returning students studying full-time for programmes at Level 5 and higher.

Scholarships will support up to three years' full-time study dependent on the length of the qualification. Students must be studying 120 credits in a given academic year.
