Periods of rain continue in the region today before returning in force tomorrow and into the weekend.
MetService has issued a severe weather warning for Rotorua and Bay of Plenty with rain expected to become heavy tomorrow afternoon.
In the 21 hours from midday Friday to 9am Saturday a further
120 to 140mm may accumulate on top of what has already fallen west of Whakatane over the last few days.
Rain is expected to become heavy east of Whakatane Friday night with 100 to 120mm expected In the 15 hours from 9pm Friday to midday Saturday.
60mm of rain fell on Rotorua by 5pm yesterday which saw short-term flooding, public events cancelled, and a school camp evacuated.
