A celebration of the naming of the new ferry (waka) "Te Eruera Wikiriwhi" was held at Orakei Korako Tourist resort on Saturday.
Members of the Wikiriwhi whanau, friends and staff at the tourist resort were present.
A short dedication service was held and the naming of the vessel was performed followed by a trip around the lake for family and friends.
Relative and Maori elder Bill Hall, who performed the blessing, said Mr Wikiriwhi had dedicated much of his life to the preservation and perpetuation of tikanga Maori.
"He had a wealth of knowledge and life experiences, in particular whakapapa.
"He had served his people as a Maori trustee with many trusts. In particular he had served 28 years with Tutukau Trust, many of them as chairman.
"He was very passionate with developing strategies to advance the welfare and well-being of the people."
In recognition of his service to Maori, Mr Wikiriwhi was awarded the Queen's Service Medal in June.
His whanau was presented with the award on his behalf at an Investiture Ceremony at Government House in Auckland in July.
