There are plenty of Matariki (Maori New Year) events happening in Rotorua this month to keep adults and children entertained and educated.

Te Reo Wainene o Tua: The Sweet Story of Yester-year is being held tomorrow from 10am to midday at the Rotorua Library. The storytelling session about Maori history is presented entirely in te reo Maori by cultural figures Joe Harawira and Scotty Morrison.

The free sessions are aimed at Kura Kaupapa Maori classes.

On Saturday, June 18, there will be a Matariki Whanau Night at the Rotorua Museum from 5pm to 9pm.

The whole whanau is welcome to share fun Matariki celebrations, experience the story of Te Ao (world) using karetao and puoro (Maori puppets and instruments), enjoy face painting and a range of Matariki themed crafts. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 5 to 15. Those under 5 are free.

A session about the history behind karetao puoro will be held at the Rotorua Museum on Sunday, June 19 at 1.30pm. Renowned karetao puoro expert James Webster (Tainui, Te Arawa) will give a free talk about these special taonga, the history and use today.

The Rotorua Lakes Council has produced a booklet outlining all the Matariki-themed events in Rotorua this month. Copies were distributed inside the Rotorua Weekender last month but spare copies can be picked up at Rotorua Lakes Council, Rotorua Library or from the council's website.
