Ever wondered how your phone knows where you are, or why sometimes two devices say you are in a different location?

Learn this and more in the first Tech Simple Talk at Rotorua Library on Thursday March 15 at 6pm.

A range of Tech Simple Talks were developed by Massey University with the aim of bringing experts into the wider community to help explain new technology, how it works, how it can help us and what it may look like in the future.

Explore how mobile phones and devices determine our location and uncover the principles and techniques of a Global Positioning System. The presentation is delivered in simple terms without assuming prior knowledge in the area.

This free talk will be of interest to people of all ages who want to know how their phone, GPS or Fitbit tracks location, as well as older children looking at a career in science or engineering, and to those already working with telecommunications technology.

Presenter Dr Faraz Hasan believed scientific discussions should not be held exclusively at places like universities and schools.

"Having these public talks will contribute to developing a passion for science across the country. This will eventually create a well-informed society in the long run," she said.

Dr Hasan is a senior lecturer at Massey University's School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, where he leads the telecommunication and network engineering research group.

Rotorua Library Communications lead, Sandra Quinn, is excited to have someone with such experience and knowledge come and speak to the community.

"Rotorua is known for its innovative technology and entrepreneurs, so we hope that locals with an interest in communications technology will take this opportunity to attend talk and Q&A session."

The Tech Simple Talk will be held in the Discovery Space on the second floor of the new Rotorua Library building.

The presentation will last around 45 minutes and include a question and answer session.

Entry is free although gold coin koha is appreciated. Numbers are limited so booking is essential.

Visit www.rotorualibrary.govt.nz for further information and booking.
