Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Māori language week, starts on Monday and there are plenty of events on across Rotorua.

The theme for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2018 is Kia Kaha te reo Māori - let's make the Māori language strong.

Rotorua Library Te Aka Mauri is getting into the spirit with a variety of family events.

Kaiurungi mātauranga Māori Anahera Sadler said te reo Māori was a language full of rich stories, nuances, spirituality, humour and connection uniquely derived from Aotearoa.

"Learning te reo Māori gives people access to te ao Māori (the Māori world) and to Māori worldviews."

One of the new initiatives being launched during the week is a weekly meet-up providing a supportive environment for learners at all levels to speak in and practice te reo Māori.

The inaugural Kapu Tī Kōrero – Kōrero over the teacups - will be held on Monday at 11am.

Free sessions which are open to all will then be held each Monday at the later time of 11.30am.

Sadler welcomes everyone to come along for that and all other events.

"We would love you and your whānau to join us. We are all in the process of learning so let's learn together Rotorua.

"Come and fall in love with te reo Māori at Te Aka Mauri."
