Manslaughter charge after woman's death at Acacia Bay near Taupo

A man is facing a manslaughter charge after allegedly using his vehicle to cause a woman's death near Taupo yesterday.

Adrian Ngamotu, 54, appeared in the Rotorua District Court today and was remanded by Judge Greg Hollister-Jones to reappear in the city's high court on May 24.

Ngamotu is charged with causing the death of Lisa-Anne Ngamotu by using his vehicle dangerously.

He is also charged with assaulting Logan Gillard at Taupo by using a vehicle as a weapon.

He was not asked to plead to either charge.

When he initially appeared, the judge stood him down so he could be seen by a forensic nurse.

When he reappeared later in the day his lawyer, Andy Schulze, did not oppose a remand in custody.

Ngamotu limped into the dock wearing a police-issue blue plastic coverall; his face was badly swollen and both eyes blackened.

It was earlier reported a 45-year-old woman suffering from motor vehicle injuries was flown from Acacia Bay to Waikato Hospital yesterday morning where she later died as a result of her injuries.
