A Rotorua man found not guilty by way of insanity to a charge of kidnapping a toddler will remain in the care of a mental health facility so he will "remain well".
The man, who has name suppression, appeared in the Rotorua District Court via audio visual link before Judge
Phillip Cooper today. The man was charged with unlawfully carrying off an 18-month-old without consent with intent to cause him to be confined in Rotorua on December 12 last year.
The man's lawyer, Louis Te Kani, told the court his client had been in the care of a mental health facility for about 11 months, had been taking his medication and been managing well.
Judge Cooper said a report had reviewed the man's care highlighting how his treatment plan had been well managed and if he was to have to move to "unsuitable living conditions" he could relapse or try to harm himself or start using illegal substances.
Judge Cooper told the court it was in the interest of the public the man remained in hospital care.
