A man's ear has been bitten off in a fight involving a group of people early on Sunday in Rotorua.

Rotorua police are still looking for the man believed to be responsible.

The fight, around Reeve Rd and Scott Ave, involved a group of people, some of whom had knives, Rotorua police crime prevention manager Inspector Brendon Keenan said.

He said the man whose ear was bitten off was taken to Rotorua Hospital.

Despite schools being on holiday, 28 fewer offences were reported to police in the past week.

Keenan said minor offences traditionally increased in the holidays but the 142 offences reported compared with 170 the previous week.

However, seven more serious crimes, such as stabbings and sexual offences, were reported (45 compared with 38 the previous week).

"We had an increase in burglaries from dwellings and other volume crime and as a result we are targeting staff to be in the Glenholme and the CBD areas."
