A Te Puke store manager accused of illegally selling synthetic cannabis from his workplace appeared in court today.

Harjit Singh Bath, 24, faced a charge of selling an approved psychoactive substance product without a licence when he appeared in Tauranga Registrar's Court this morning.

Police allege that on April 23 this year Bath sold some Tai High Black to a male customer without an approved retail licence.

If convicted Bath faces a fine of up to $40,000 or three months' prison.

Police say that when they executed a search warrant at the store earlier this week they recovered a quantity of the then-legal highs .
