The Rotorua Armed Offenders Squad were called to Whakatane yesterday about 5.10pm.
Senior Sergeant Karl Konlechner said they were called to help with the arrest of a male, but the local police in Whakatane had made the arrest before they arrived.
Cordons were put in place in the Coastlands areato assist Police.
The man was stopped at one of the cordons and taken into custody.
