The rāhui covers the area between Okurei Point and Little Waihi Bar.

A rāhui is in place following a death at the northern end of Maketū Beach at the weekend.

Emergency services were advised just after 4pm on Saturday that an unresponsive male had washed up on the shoreline.

“Despite immediate medical attention, he was sadly unable to be revived,” a police statement said.

A social media post by Newdicks Beach-Maketu today said a blessing had taken place this morning and rāhui was now in place until February 15.

The rāhui covers the area between Okurei Point and Little Waihi Bar and prohibits public access and harvesting of kai moana along the foreshore and seabed.

The man’s death will be referred to the Coroner.
