A local sports club is revving up its members for a charity can drive and has challenged other Rotorua clubs to get on board too.
The Rotorua BMX club is currently collecting non-perishable food to be donated to the Salvation Army foodbank as part of the Rotorua Daily Post Christmasappeal, held in conjunction with the Rotorua Weekender and The Hits 97.5FM.
Club president Melanie Short said she tried to do something for the foodbank every year, but this was the first year she had got the club involved.
"We have seen a bit of a surge in membership numbers this year and we all know we're a really lucky club so we are using the Christmas appeal to encourage our members to think of others at this time of year."
Ms Short said the club was even getting its youngest members involved.
"We're talking about the can drive to the parents who in turn go talk about it to their children and the word gets spread that way - it's a trickle effect.
"I know we're not the only club in Rotorua willing and able to help out so I'd challenge all the clubs to get on board this year and donate to the foodbank.
"If grabbing a couple of cans out of your cupboard means less fortunate families get a parcel over Christmas, it's a small price to pay for a wonderful outcome."
