A lost and disoriented hunter has been found and reunited with his companions after a beacon was activated.

The Taupo-based Greenlea Rescue Helicopter was alerted just before dark tonight to the active beacon east of Taupo.

A lost hunter was located and reunited with his companions at a relatively nearby camp, a helicopter spokeswoman said.

"As a group they are leaving the area tomorrow and the party in question will be sticking close to the others following his ordeal in which he became completely disoriented."

Earlier today the helicopter had been tasked to take a young girl who had fallen from a horse north of Taupo to Rotorua Hospital. She had suspected spinal injuries.
