A Chinese tourist who was hit by a car while trying to cross Fenton St last month remains in Waikato Hospital.

The woman was hit on April 17 near the Countdown supermarket.

She suffered life-threatening injuries and has been on life support in Waikato Hospital's ICU for several weeks.

Senior Sergeant Nicky Cooney of the Rotorua police traffic section said the woman's condition had improved and she was now in the high dependency unit.

However, she said she still had a "long road ahead".

She said it was understood she had a couple of family members from China with her but there was no plans being made yet for her to return to China.

No one has been charged over the crash as police were still conducting their investigations. There were several witnesses and they have been spoken to by the police.

Ms Cooney said the driver of the car was not hurt but was extremely shaken.
