While Rotorua's mountain bike trails are well-known throughout the country, many locals still haven't tried them. This weekend is their chance to get that sorted.

Sport Bay of Plenty is promoting April Adventure and it's aiming to get locals trying new things with mountain biking as the natural choice, said recreation advisor Lauren Atkinson.

"With over 150km of trails and a local guide, it is the perfect opportunity to try the sport. The whole idea is to provide a great experience to people who want to try something new," she said.

Sport BOP has joined forces with Mountain Bike Rotorua who is providing a beginners' session.

"The morning is for anyone who is curious about mountain biking, but hasn't tried it yet. The health and social benefits are obvious, but the pure joy of riding a bike as an adult - there is a child-like rediscovery," said Tu Mutu, director of Mountain Bike Rotorua.

"There is also a certain amount of pride you feel as a Rotorua resident when you ride the trails."

Places are limited, and the price has been kept at $10 .
