Lizzie Marvelly

Lizzie Marvelly

Rotorua's Lizzie Marvelly is launching her first pop single tomorrow after two classical crossover albums.

Generation Young was co-written by Marvelly, Sinead Burgess of Universal Music Australia-ABC Music Australia and Stuart Crichton who has worked with Delta Goodrem, Sugababes and Stan Walker. It is being labelled as an "anthemic pop at its best."

Hailing a youth revolution, the first single from Lizzie's forthcoming EP stands for following your dreams and being "the change, not just the crowd."

"After so many years of singing other peoples' words, I couldn't ignore the voices in my head anymore," the 24-year-old said.

"I think as you grow and evolve, your dreams change shape or come more sharply into focus. It can be pretty terrifying to take a step and make a change and the road ahead of me is definitely unknown; but it's leading me forward to exciting new places and I'm loving every minute of it."

Kissing classical crossover goodbye, Marvelly has indeed stepped into the unknown as a singer/songwriter. Grammy nominated English music producer, Nick Patrick, whose most recent success includes Sol3 Mio, believed Marvelly will succeed in the world of pop music.

"Lizzie has that rarest of gifts that only great artists have - the ability to reach out and touch your soul."

International songwriter and producer Stuart Crichton who co-wrote Generation Young with Marvelly agrees with Patrick.

"It has been my pleasure to work with Lizzie on two songs for her debut EP. Having 25 years experience working with some of the biggest pop artists, I can say that Lizzie is an amazing talent that New Zealand should be proud of. She's a great writer and has a strong identifiable voice.

"Generation Young is one of my favourite songs that I have co-written in the past while. I'm sure it'll be a big hit for Lizzie."

Described by the John Key as a "national treasure" her singing talent was discovered by Frankie Stevens and her uncle Sir Howard Morrison in her early teens.

By the age of 16 she was on the road touring, which soon led to two major international signings, two top-ten albums, two European tours, concerts in Asia and Arabia amongst others, a smash-hit charity single and countless national anthems at televised rugby tests.

This isn't the first time she's written her own music, she wrote her first song at age six, beginning a journey of music discovery throughout her school years. When she fell into the classical crossover genre as a teenager, Marvelly continued to write music, scribbling lyrics on various hotel notepads as she travelled around the world.

"Writing is an amazing, but vulnerable process. As Joni Mitchell so eloquently puts it, 'Part of you pours out of me in these lines from time to time,'."

Marvelly's single Generation Young is released tomorrow on iTunes. Her third studio album, her writer's debut, is also expected in 2014.
