Letters: What about rights of the unborn child?

I recently read in your newspaper about the great show of women around the world who are afraid that they might not be able to have access to abortions when they need them and I was shocked.

This is so wrong, our society is always saying we should stand up for the rights of our children - no smacking, getting an education, and have clothes to wear etc.

But what about the rights of the unborn child, do they get a choice? We would not try and kill our own living kids just because they don't fit our agendas but we simply make it work.

Some say the foetus is just a bunch of cells so it doesn't matter anyway? Are you and I just a bunch of cells?

Some say it's my choice but isn't that what contraception is for? If it's your choice how about just waiting till the time is right?!

What about adoption, there are couples who long for children but can't seem to conceive and perhaps IVF doesn't work, give these people your children!

Society needs to change before it's too late!

Your correspondent T McConkey refers to your columnists (Letters February 1).

I take them or leave them. If I think they write a load of rubbish - I simply don't read them.

But one - still wet behind the ears - definitely raises my ire. She pontificates on matters she does not have maturity or experience of life to write about. Stick to your music Lizzie. Now that is an area where you shine.

Te Maori pages
Your correspondent T McConkey (Letters February 1) implies that readers of the Te Maori pages in your paper are racially biased.

Perhaps, but are they any more so than he/herself? As for the dissertations, they are self evidently a part of current reality and a re-examination is not a retrial.

Such presumption has no place in an open and fair minded society.
