Letters to the editor: Why is council sharing cost of tree removal?

Your article, (News, May 6) says the cost of removing the big gum trees from in front of the quarantine hotel Rydges is being shared by the hotel and Rotorua Lakes Council.

I would like to know the reasoning behind this.

I counted at least 10 people engaged in this operation today so wages would make this an expensive exercise.

Rydges has been well compensated by the taxpayer as a quarantine facility.

So why, as a privately owned business, is the ratepayer helping to fund the upkeep of its asset?

Heartened by speech

I viewed National Party leader Judith Collins' speech at the National Party Conference online and was extremely heartened to hear her views on separatist governance in our dear country.

There is a growing groundswell of concern and alarm at what, in my opinion, is an insidious development.

If Collins continually speaks out on this issue then I believe National will be guaranteed to regain parliamentary control at the next general election. (Abridged)
