Letters to the editor: Vaccination among vulnerable should be promoted

I do not think the media should be making headlines about people who will refuse the Covid-19 vaccine.

Hannah Tamaki did say (News, March 5) people should "make sure you choose for yourself, not be talked into something" undoubtedly knowing that she has a strong following who will do what she says and does. Unfortunately, these are very vulnerable people.

In my view, the selfish act of the Tamakis refusing the vaccine is not only putting themselves at risk, despite Brian Tamaki having previously said that God will protect them, but also those of the team of 5 million wanting the vaccine but still in the queue.

Covid-19 has provided the media with a field day for negativity for over a year. Now it's time for positivity.

The press needs to actively promote those with a high public profile endorsing the vaccine and their concern to protect the team of 5 million, not those with a high public profile refusing it.

Yes, vaccination is voluntary, but it should be promoted, particularly amongst the most vulnerable.

Questions about flags

Someone put up three South African Flags in Fenton St.

Last Friday, I saw a man pick one up and throw it on the road. I wasn't clear on whether it's legal to display flags in this manner, and if it is legal, then does throwing one on the road, constitute a hate crime?

Banning whitebait fishing would help with overfishing

On the Sunday programme, the possible overfishing of our waters came up for discussion.

Maybe the simple act of making whitebait fishing illegal would do much to help - millions of fish never get beyond the fingerling stage of growth, thus greatly depleting the stock of adult fish.
