Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Titewhai Harawira on Waitangi Day. Photo / File

A large-scale study analysing New Zealanders' feelings about Waitangi Day reveal 51 per cent back Waitangi Day as a bicultural celebration, with 8 per cent opposed.

A moving photograph, published February 5, of two powerful women - Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Maori activist Titiwhai Harawira - holding hands on the Upper Marae
at Waitangi is, in my view, a symbol of hope and unity for New Zealanders.

A missed opportunity

We spent a lovely Sunday afternoon at the Government Gardens listening to the music. The wind was a bit chilly but nonetheless enjoyable.

After, we walked around the gardens and they were beautiful. The grass could have done with some water but it is summer.

The other point I wish to raise is the wonderful buildings there unused or underused. What a shame.

Most other parks in cities and towns would have had at least one place selling cold drinks and ice cream - the area was packed with people, but unless you brought your own there was nothing to drink.

Come to think of it there have been no ice cream sellers around the streets.

In my view, a missed opportunity again.
