In Wednesday's Daily Post, it is stated that the DHBs' spokeswoman said the workforce of about 2 to 3 per cent who had not had the Covid vaccination would be stood down on pay.

I assume the rest of the workforce can just work harder. No rest on pay for them.

In 1959, I had to have all my vaccinations plus the small pox vaccination before it was even considered that I could start nursing training.

Rules had to be accepted. Why the change?

Splendid entrance no more

Gary Smith has it right, something drastic needs to happen to the Fenton St area of Rotorua (News, November 16). In my view, it is on the threshold of becoming a ghetto and believe me, I am not exaggerating.

We cannot take any more of the homeless, and in my opinion, it is foolish of the council to act as though we can.

Fenton St used to be a splendid entrance to our fair city, full of nice motels and other businesses, a car showroom and two supermarkets, the top end also had lovely shops and restaurants - now it is just a street one has to drive through - most as quickly as they can.

This leads to another point: Fenton St desperately needs a controlled crossing between the car dealers and Oppies fish and chips, it is only a matter of time before a bad accident happens.

Social housing focus needed

Rotorua Housing Crisis: 3500 homes needed in a year - draft report - was the Daily Post's headline on November 11.

Are there now more than 2000 people staying in emergency motels in Rotorua?

10,000 new homes needed by 2050 as the district's population swells to 90,600, according to council's preferred estimates.

If the population is currently 77,300 and it increased to 90,600 in 29 years, that's 458 people extra per year.

That would be only 0.6 per cent population growth a year - it can hardly be described as a population swell.

Its been well reported that the demographic of Rotorua is changing.

If 3500 brand-new houses are to be built by 2023, do you think the housing shortage will disappear?

The focus needs to be on building social housing, as I believe that is the increasing demographic with Rotorua's swelling emergency housing motel industry.

In my view, it may even result in negative future population growth.

What is puzzling, in my view, is why have the council has not come with a more workable solution?
