With regards to the article in the paper about iwi being concerned with the sewage leak into Lake Rotorua (News, October 20).

Why does the Rotorua Council not learn from the court case over the rubbish dump
where almost $1 million was spent on legal and consultancy costs between RLC
and the BOPRC (News, October 1) that ratepayers' money must be spent on basic services such as sewerage and water pipes and not fancy projects?

Lake Rotorua is one of our local jewels.

The lakes around the Rotorua area are not toilets and must not be used as toilets.

Lakefront spending ironic

I read the article (News, October 19) about contaminated water leaching from the Rotorua landfill and possibly ending up in waterways that lead to Lake Rotorua with anger and sadness.

A District Court judge is quoted as saying he feels Lakes Council shows little remorse and the way its legal arguments had been presented could "arguably be said to minimise the offending". Similar offending dates back to 1998.

How can we trust our council when a judge comes to these conclusions?

It's ironic that the council sees fit to spend $20 million of ratepayer's money beautifying the Lakefront, after allowing the contaminated water to leak from the landfill.

That $20 million would have gone a long way towards paying for high-tech solutions for dealing with our rubbish. Instead, the council continues to bury our waste. Out of sight and out of mind.

Our nasty gift to future generations.

Too much junk

It is a crying shame that we have to buy junk that only lasts a few months and then cannot be repaired and gets thrown out.

It is definitely better to buy more expensive items that will, hopefully, last.

The problem is better quality is hard to find.

It must surely be within the compass of Kiwi ingenuity to be able to manufacture electronic items, toasters, heaters, irons, etc - surely it would be something worth looking into.

I hate having to throw away electrical goods that have not lasted a year.
