Letters to the editor: Glass at playground symbolise council's priorities

Your article (News, April 3) about glass fragments in the bark at Susan St playground, in my opinion, symbolises this council's priorities.

This has been an ongoing problem for young families with children. They go home with cut and bleeding feet.

The nearly $60,000 cost of replacement rubber matting is apparently too much. There is no guarantee the matting would be treated with respect either, according to the council.

But the council is prepared to sink $20 million into the Lakefront redevelopment.

Do tourists use the Susan St playground? No, just local families; the same people who are paying for the Lakefront via their rates.

Children with bleeding feet versus Lakefront beautification, you decide which is more important.

Confusion distressing

I agree with the many people who have shown their distress at the confusion over the shop opening restrictions in New Zealand. We had a similar problem in the UK many years ago.

Surely the time has come for shopkeepers to choose for themselves and for shoppers to also decide if they should shop on the Easter and Christmas holidays.

People will not attend church just because the shops are closed and provided shop workers are fairly treated with regard to having to work and given time off in lieu and/or sufficient extra pay then surely that would solve the matter.

I really think a more intelligent approach to this matter would be favourable instead of this confusion every year!
