UPGRADE: Rotorua Lakes Council's plans for the Springfield/Otonga roads intersection. IMAGE/SUPPLIED

Springfield roadworks are a nightmare - I agree.

All this for a "raised roundabout"? Then why didn't they just put one in instead of pulling up and replacing, in same place, kerbing and channelling, then putting crossing areas right on corners so now young children not only have to think about looking left and right but behind them as well?

Crossings should have been put up further to the school field boundary fence.

Large trucks used to have to drive over original roundabout.. how will they manage with raised one?

All this work and all you can see for it is wider footpaths and new kerbing and channelling. What a waste of money.

The shop owners have my sympathy as do the residents on the now narrower corners.
Another council cockup.

Neglected footpaths

So we have cycleways, skate park upgrades, Kuirau Park upgrades, Lakefront upgrades, millions on the museum, millions on Performing Arts Centre, statues all over including one in the middle of a roundabout, and don't forget roundabout upgrades.

Anyone would think we lived in a big corporation not a council that relied on funding from ratepayers.

Now a question for our money-spending councillors: When are you going to spend money on the 60 to 70-year-old infrastructure called footpaths?

You know the ones full of holes, rough surfaces, drop-offs that are like going down a roller-coaster, cracks, tree overhangs and now on bin days, no room on the path.

Council, your ratepayers use these paths, not tourists who flit in and out and travel by luxury coach.

You know, the ones who walk, push pushchairs, use walking frames and ride mobility scooters.

Please get your priorities right and look after your ratepayers.
