It was with total disbelief that I read in the Friday edition of the Rotorua Daily Post (News, June 29) that the proposed changes to the speed limits on the Hamurana Rd were not passed by council, but were to go back to the strategy, policy and finance committee for reconsideration.
Our councillors obviously do not hear or understand what the locals say or want.
The nonsensical speed limits along this heavily used stretch of road does not make sense at the best of times especially when you also take into account that the side road speed limits are the same as the appropriate speed limits on the Hamurana Rd, which means that Kaska Rd, for example, has an 80km/h speed limit.
Numerous families with young children walk and ride their bikes on the road as there are no footpaths for their use; also bear in mind this road is only half a kilometre long and ends in a cul-de-sac.
The 80km/h speed areas include the narrow bridge over the Hamurana stream which during the summer months is a death trap waiting to happen due to the numerous local children jumping off the bridge into the stream, I hope that this never happens but if it does then councillors should be held accountable for their stupid decisions.

Doing it yourself
It is not only the supermarkets, petrol stations and airlines that expect us to do their work for them.
Do you have a grass verge between your front lawn and the kerb?
Do you mow it regularly, keep the tree tidy, sweep the leaves etc? Well just try doing anything else with it - digging it up, planting cabbages on it, even putting a permanent car parking space there.
Yes, it belongs to the district council, those people who regularly put up your rates and send you rude letters when you do something that displeases them.
The same people who expect you to look after their property.
Do they ever pay you for the care you give to the verge outside your house?
My question is - why not? Their property, surely it is their responsibility?
